Solar production per m² (Atemp)

Shows the solar produced electricity per temperate square meter during the specified period.

What is it?

The KPI represents the amount of electricity generated by solar cells in relation to the heated surface of a building or property. It measures the efficiency and production capacity of the solar cell system per square meter of the space used for heating.

This KPI provides insights into how well the solar cell system utilizes the available surface for heating and produces electricity. A high number can indicate an efficient use of the solar energy resources and a potentially good return on investment in the solar system. On the other hand, a low number may indicate that the solar system is not using the surface efficiently or that there are challenges affecting production.

It can be useful for evaluating the efficiency of their solar systems and making decisions about maintenance, upgrades or expansions of solar capacity. It can also help assess how solar energy contributes to meeting the energy needs of a property or building.

Atemp, or thermal reference area, is the specific floor area used as a basis for calculating the building's primary energy number. It essentially describes the surface of the floor plan that is heated and lies within the building's climate screen. There is no limitation of this surface with respect to the height of the space.

Atemp is defined as the sum of the internal surface of each floor, attic and basement where the temperature is maintained above 10 °C. This sum also includes the area occupied by internal walls, openings for stairs, shafts and the like. However, the area for garages located within the building, in residential buildings or other local buildings is not included.

The KPI thus looks at the amount of energy produced by solar cells, and divides the use by the property's total (heated) area, in order to ultimately be able to compare properties and areas against each other - as their size no longer matters, only efficiency. The unit will be Wh/m2.

Note that it is not the efficiency of the solar cells themselves (and their area) that is measured, but the efficiency of the stock itself that is being looked at; that is, how much electricity a property or area produces in relation to its size (m2).

How is it calculated?

Sum of energy production / Atemp = Wh/m2

* Includes only the production during the specified time period.

Why is it important to follow?

Following the key figure is important for several reasons:

  1. Efficiency: It gives an indication of how efficient the solar cell system is in generating electricity in relation to the area used for heating. (It can also help assess whether the solar cells are being used optimally)

  2. Return on investment: By monitoring this key figure, property owners or managers can assess whether their investment in the solar cell system is providing a good return by measuring the production capacity in relation to the use of the heated surface.

  3. Upgrade decisions: Information about the solar cell production per square meter can be useful when deciding on upgrades or expansions of the solar system. If the ratio is low, it may indicate that there is room for improvement or expansion.

  4. Energy management: It helps to assess how solar energy contributes to covering the energy needs for heating within the property. It is useful for energy management and minimizing dependence on external energy sources.

  5. Environmental impact: By maximizing the efficiency of the solar cell system, organizations can reduce their environmental impact by producing more clean and renewable energy from the sun.

In summary, the key figure provides insights into the efficiency of the solar cell system and how well it contributes to the energy supply for heating. It is useful for financial planning, investment decisions and sustainability strategies for properties and buildings.
