Create a key metric

Creating key metrics helps your organization connect strategy to daily operations

1. Edit key metrics

Go to Key metrics and click Edit.

2. Define a goal

Start by clicking Add a goal.

Write down a goal that already exists in your organization’s strategy — in plain, clear language.

Keep it short, concrete, and measurable.

3. Add a strategic key metric

Now it’s time to add key metrics that measure progress toward your goal.

Click Add a strategic key metric and choose a metric that’s as closely aligned with the goal as possible.

  • If the metric fluctuates a lot over time, use a rolling sum.

  • If your portfolio or dataset changes frequently, use a distribution.

  • If you only want to focus on part of the metric, apply a filter.

4. Add an operational key metric

Operational key metrics are the ones your organization can actually influence.

Click Add an operational key metric and choose a metric that is likely to affect your strategic key metric.

It should be something tangible to work with — and clearly focused. There are two ways to achieve that. Choose either:

  • A different metric that is inherently more focused.

  • The same metric, but with a slice to narrow the focus.

Use rolling sum, distribution, and filter in the same way as described in step 3.

Click Done when you’re satisfied.

5. Assign groups

Click the Show contributing groups icon to assign groups that should follow and improve the key metric.

Once a group is added, the key metric will automatically appear on that group’s page.

Note: You can (technically) also assign groups to strategic key metrics — but focus primarily on operational ones, since these are what the organization works with day-to-day.

🎉 You’ve now created your first key metrics!
